Sustainable tourism as a tool for change towards balanced development
Sustainable tourism: an achievable challenge.
It encompasses tourist activities that are respectful of the natural, cultural and social environment, as well as the values of the community visited. It arises as a fight against the main environmental conflicts generated by traditional tourism:
The energy.
The most important energy consumption in tourism occurs in transportation.
The water.
The tourism industry is a large consumer of water.
The waste.
Uncontrolled, they seriously affect.
The fires.
To a large extent, tourism is usually a summer activity that coincides with the hottest months of the year. This, together with the uncivil behavior of some tourists, contributes to the problem.
The noise.
Landscape degradation.
Tourism is a great consumer of landscape
Visitors must therefore have a truly participatory attitude in their travel experience. They must get involved with the region they visit and be aware of the impact that their tourist activities can have. They must assimilate that the gain is reciprocal. They obtain higher quality standards for the products and services they receive, while promoting the environmental sustainability of the place visited.
The open questions surrounding the environmental sustainability of human activities and development models are today more urgent than ever. Climate change, the food crisis or the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, such as water or fishing, place the sustainability of our model of life at the forefront of current social events and political debate.
Sustainable tourism: an achievable challenge
The challenge is the preservation of the planet's limited resources, the fragile marine and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as the material and intangible heritage, promoting sustainable and responsible tourism.
This represents a unique opportunity for the most relevant actors. Companies, local governments and citizens must reflect, propose and lay the foundations for the development of a sustainable tourism offer.
According to the Spanish Sustainability Observatory (OSE), the development of sustainable and quality tourism can generate employment in our country, economic benefits in local populations, settling the population in certain rural areas; and help maintain traditions and customs with great social roots.
The opportunity offered by the European economic recovery funds (Next Generation) must act as a catalyst and accelerator of the sustainable transformation process of the sector supported by technology, promoting this fundamental economic sector as a driving force for investment and generator of wealth in a socially and environmentally sustainable way.
This is why SicaSoft Low Carbon Cities is presented as an ideal project. Focused on helping companies, local governments and citizens to implement actions that promote and consolidate a sustainable tourism plan. It is a collaborative and intelligent platform for the territorial implementation of efficient water, energy and climate change management methods for municipal managers and companies, so that these 3 agents evolve in coordination in their territory to achieve an attractive tourist offer of sustainable services.
